While bands rock and groove along the banks of the Sandy River for the ninth Soulful Giving Blanket Concert on Saturday, Aug. 3, the feelings will be bittersweet: the entertainment will not return next year.

Since 2011, the Soulful Giving Blanket Concert has been held at the 15-acre estate and gardens of Junki and Linda Yoshida, 29330 S.E. Stark St., Troutdale. All money raised from the concert is donated to Randall Children's Hospital and Providence Cancer Center.

"We do this year after year because we want to raise money for Randall's Children," Linda says. "We're honoring a pledge. We're doing it because we've lost so many people in our lives to cancer."

Junki is a Japanese-born businessman who found success with his self-named brand of teriyaki-flavored sauces.

His wife, Linda Yoshida, serves as the Soulful Giving Foundation's president. All eight Soulful Giving Foundation board members have had someone close to them die from cancer.

This concert is the last because the Yoshidas are donating their property, valued at approximately $2 million, to Randall Children's Hospital, which plans to use the grounds for children's cancer retreats.

Performers at the last Soulful Giving event include Dancehall Days, a band blending pop, dance and R&B; Arrival, an ABBA tribute band; and Stone in Love, a Journey cover group.

Premium tickets cost $50 and include parking at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC), bus shuttle service and two drink tokens.

VIP tickets cost $100 and include parking at MHCC. The upgraded ticket includes limo shuttle service, complimentary champagne, a visit to the VIP food pavilion, an extra drink token and a bonus goodie bag.

"We're just offering so much for people who buy a $100 ticket," Linda said. "They're getting a lot of luxury."

In addition to live music, the 21-and-older event will include food tastings, a craft village with artisan ware for sale and a silent auction. Executive chefs from 13 fine-dining Portland restaurants will serve up culinary delights.

The event also includes a full-service bar. Deutsch Family Wines, which owns more than 300 wineries, will donate more than $5,000 of their top shelf selections.

Hosting the final concert has made the event even more popular, Linda noted.

"It's the last event, so we're seeing record ticket sales," she says.

Many ticket buyers are expressing disappointment that the event is concluding, but are excited to attend the last show — a sentiment Linda certainly understands.

"It's a mixed bag for us," she says. "It's sad and happy."

The Soulful Giving Foundation has raised more than $1.5 million for cancer research in a little less than 10 years.

"I think it's just a full day of fun for a reasonable price," Linda says. "It's just the opportunity to give back. There are very few places where you buy a concert ticket and every single dime goes to cancer research."
