PORTLAND — The Reynolds baseball team fell behind for all of five minutes before charging past David Douglas for a 5-1 road win Thursday.

Alex Hendrickson drilled a two-out line drive to center field to push the Raiders in front in the third inning.

It marked the start of three consecutive innings in which Reynolds would find a way to push a run across home plate.

In the fourth, Ethan Jerome drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the inning. Drexler Dickey put a ground ball in play that allowed Jerome to scramble around to third base, and moments later Chase Baldwin connected on a tall pop up that sent Scots' second baseman J. Wilkins back to the edge of the infield.

The ball hit his glove.

Jerome took off from third.

The throw came in high.

Jerome scored without getting his pants dirty.

It was a similar procedure in the fifth inning.

Nick Blegen drew a lead-off walk, and advanced to third base on Justice Thompson's liner to center field.

Next up, Alex Hendrickson blasted a sacrifice fly to left field. Blegen broke for home and scored with a head-first Superman dive across the plate.

"We were aggressive and took a lot of opportunities that most teams would not — I think we got in the pitcher's head," Blegen said.

Thompson added the game's final run when a balk gave him a free pass to trot home. He hit 4-for-4, all singles, out of the No. 2 spot in the order.

David Douglas tried to climb back into contention, but Raiders' starter Ian Girtman was up to the task.

In the fifth, Dakotah Lohmeier blasted a double over the top of the center fielder's head to put runners at second and third base. Girtman struck out the next batter on three pitches.

"By the second or third inning I had my curveball working," Girtman said. "It was all about throwing strikes and trusting my defense to make plays behind me."

In the sixth, an error allowed Cal Kelly to reach base. He would work his way around to third before Girtman surprised him with a pick-off throw to end the threat.

"I saw he was getting an early lead over there, and we practice the timing of our pick plays all the time," Girtman said. "I trusted my coaches, made a good throw and we got him."

Girtman struck out nine batters before giving way to Dickey to close out the final inning.

David Douglas gave it one more try in the seventh with Jose Melendez reaching on a lead-off walk. He would swipe second base and move along to third on an error. Teammate Jermaine Robinson flied out to center field, sending Melendez in motion for home. But Blegen fired a laser on target that allowed catcher Josh Blegen to tag the runner out on the hip to end the game.

"We were up on the scoreboard, so I figured it was worth a shot," Nick Blegen said. "I had all of my momentum going into the throw. It felt right the moment I let it go."

It marked the third consecutive inning that the Scots put a runner on third base without producing a run.

Jorge Meza singled to lead off the second inning and came around to score on an error to give the Scots a brief 1-0 lead.
