Grab your hard hats and head downtown, because Hillsboro's eighth annual Public Works Day returns Saturday, May 18, offering residents an up close look at heavy equipment and the chance to learn a bit about the work being done around town.

From 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., during the Hillsboro Farmers Market, Adults and children will be able to climb inside the heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, Vactor trucks, hydrant vehicles, and skid steer construction equipment. Also on display will be examples of the city's new interactive traffic signals and LED streetlights

The fun happens at Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza, 150 E. Main St., in Hillsboro.

The celebration is part of National Public Works Week. In a statement, city officials said employees in the departments work tirelessly to "build, improve, maintain, and protect the systems and services vital to our community's health, safety, and comfort."
