Ultrasonic Cleanings are a Blast!
A professional cleaning is the best way to get back to that shiny, smooth and whiter smile. Left unchecked, bacteria biofilm, stain and calculus on tooth surfaces lead to periodontal disease and other systemic failures.
As technology improves, the old-fashioned way of removing these substances with hand tools is becoming more obsolete. Ultrasonic scalers have been around for decades; our implementation began thirty years ago.
An ultrasonic scaler is just what it sounds like, a tool that vibrates 25,000 to 45,000 times per second and virtually blasts away plaque, calculus and stain using a very fine tip. A stream of water passes over the vibrating tip as a coolant and flushes away bacteria and debris. The vibration of the water creates millions of tiny bubbles (cavitation) that burst the walls of bacteria in the mouth making the mouth a healthier environment. Years ago, some experienced sensitivity while this device was being used, but our newer contemporary models have virtually eliminated this. Besides the extra suctioning of water and debris and occasional squeaks, an ultrasonic scaler makes the process easier on the patient and more comfortable for a hygienist to administrate. When particularly tough stain or calculus is present, hand instruments are still used. Experts agree that the best results are achieved by combining the use of power ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments.
