Local artists showing at Art Elements
Art Elements Gallery will exhibit Bold & Beautiful, an art show featuring the paintings of Marla Baggetta and Susan Greenbaum and the artisan jewelry of Linda Hayes through June 1 at the gallery located at 604 E. First St. in Newberg.
"This series of pieces grew out of my fascination with the virtually infinite variety of flowers and fauna all around us in the Northwest," writes Baggetta in her artist's statement. "Color, aroma, texture conspire to demand our attention! In paint, I've attempted to capture the exuberance and beauty of their displays. Creating these abstract pieces is a joyful and physical process that sometimes involves layer upon layer of paint, collage, inks and other media that seems necessary to bring the images to fruition, somewhat like the blossoming of a flower. I hope the resulting pieces express both delicacy and boldness, strength and fragility."
"As a flower blooms from a seed or a bulb, my paintings evolve with whatever means feels most immediate to the vision that is opening up before me as I begin my conversation with each painting," writes Greenbaum in her artist statement. "Years of noticing, learning and experimenting have given me the tools to interpret the beauty of a floral world in my own unique way. I found
vvsuch joy in creating a series to honor this magnificience of nature."
Her paintings are in several mediums including acrylic, oil and encaustic.
Hayes says her surrounds influence her creative work.
"My home is in a stand of tall oaks and when working at night I can step outside and see the winter moon through the silhouettes of gloriously twisted branches," she writes in her artist statement. "Or on a summer evening, pause to rest my eyes and smell the fragrant honeysuckle. Often this is just the break I need to see a gemstone layout with fresh eyes and make an adjustment that satisfies my design intent. The construction process is sometimes repetitive and requires discipline, but this can be a type of mediation in itself. I hope the beauty in my materials, designs and craftsmanship finds resonance with you."
Art Elements is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment. Call 503-487-6141.
