May Music Monday sounds blue
Blues supergroup Golden State Lone Star Revue — featuring Grammy-nominated harmonica, vocalist and bandleader Marl Hummel with guitar legend Anson Funderburg and Mike Keller on guitar, R. W. Grigsby on bass and Wes Starr on drums — will play the Music Monday concert May 27 at Lake Theater and Cafe, 106 N. State St., Lake Oswego.
Hummel was born in Connecticut, but moved to Los Angeles as a newborn. He took up an interest in blues harp and rock-blues music in high school but soon discovered the originators like Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter. He started frequenting the Ash Grove club on Melrose Avenue in L.A., where within a three-month period he saw three blues legends whom he would later work with on a regular basis: Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee and James Cotton. By 1985, Mark Hummel's Blues Survivors hit the road full time and have continued ever since.
Hummel's latest album "Harpbreaker" is an all-instrumental harmonica album that redefines the scope and beauty of what the instrument is capable of in the right hands.
Funderburgh was born in Plano, Texas, where he first picked up a guitar in high school, and was hit by the blues bug through Jimmy Reed Lightnin' Hopkins.
Guitar youngblood Keller resides in Austin where he leads his own band, The Keller Brothers, plays in Little Elmo Blues Band, is a sideman for Paul Oscher's group plus played five years as a Fabulous Thunderbird, and more.
R.W. Grigsby and Wes Starr are old Rome, Georgia natives and they've played with a who's who of famed musicians, including Omar & The Howlers, Junior Brown, Jimmy Vaughan, Asleep At the Wheel, Gary Primich, Kim Wilson, Carlene Carter, Hal Ketchum, Earl King, James Cotton and more.
Tickets are $20 each or $100 for a VIP table for four closest to the stage.
