Track stars in the making
Lake Oswego School District's Community School offers many options to students of all ages to stay busy and active over the summer, including curriculum enrichment, youth sports and adult programs.
During the first two weeks of July, students second through eighth grade had the chance to work with Lake Oswego High School track coach Vince Kinney, who instructed the kids through the many track and field events. The Laker track camp is just one of the many athletic opportunities available through the Community School, which also offers baseball, basketball, dance, golf, tennis, soccer, swimming, water polo, wrestling and more.
Kinney said turnout the week of July 1 was low, due to the Fourth of July holiday, but this week, about 20 kids participated in the camp. Kinney was assisted by current and former Laker track athletes, who taught campers the proper form to throw javelin and discus, jump over hurdles and run sprints. They also offered instruction in high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put and pole vault.
Enrollment in many Community School programs is not restricted to LOSD families but is open to all, including residents of surrounding communities. This is the last week of track camp, but there are many athletic and academic programs throughout the summer. Learn more at www.losdschools.org/Page/1137/.
