The Lakers, facing Lincoln in the Oregon High School Water Polo state playoffs on Friday at Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, trailed the Cardinals by just one goal early, by just two at the half and by just three scores after three quarters.

But Lake Oswego never got the breakthrough it needed, dropped a 12-7 decision to Lincoln and saw its 2018 season come to an end.

The Lakers, after placing third in the Three Rivers League regular season, were seventh-seeded entering the playoffs, but couldn't find an answer for the 10th-ranked Cardinals.

Lake Oswego led 1-0 early on a score by Ben Rabbino, but saw Lincoln score three straight late in the first quarter and never trailed again. The Cardinals' scores came from Anderson MacMillan, Sam Guy and Chris Elfick.

Lincoln extended its lead to 5-2 on scores by Guy and Elfick in the second period, but the Lakers edged back within 6-4 at the half thanks to goals from Grant Tarbell and Rabbino.

The game got even tighter in the third quarter, with the Lakers closing within one goal twice — at 6-5 following a score from Myles Williams, and at 8-7 on another Williams goal — but never got even.

The Cardinals then shut out Lake Oswego in the fourth quarter — they got 13 saves in the game from goalie Aidan Greene — and edged away to win 12-7.

For the game, Williams led the Lakers with four goals (three in the third quarter) and Rabbino added two. Guy led all scorers with five goals and Elfick finished with four.

For Lake Oswego, seniors Conor Smith, Rabbino, Williams, Ethan Yoon, Tarbell, Clay Lucas, Will McVey-Schindel and George Awad played their final games as Lakers.
