Experience the beauty of Lan Su Chinese Garden with WLACC
Want to experience tranquility? Then join your friends at the West Linn Adult Community Center on a bus trip to Lan Su Chinese Garden Tuesday, June 11.
The garden's tranquility is the first thing you will notice.
Built in 1999 on land donated by NW Natural and with help from Portland's sister city, Suzhou, China, the garden is meant to awaken all one's senses as you are immersed in its peaceful beauty.
Suzhou is in China's Jiangsu province, famous for its breathtaking Ming Dynasty gardens. Lan Su Garden was designed and created by 65 artisans from Suzhou and the Portland garden is said to be one of the finest examples of a traditional Chinese garden outside of China. More than 400 species of authentic Chinese native bushes, shrubs, trees and flowers surround a koi filled lake. Traditional Chinese structures, bearing poetic names such as Celestial Hall of Permeating Fragrance and Flowers Bathing in Spring Rain, also grace its borders. Natural stone creations rise like exquisite artwork throughout the space. The result is perfect harmony combining art, architecture, design and nature. Visitors can walk along the paths and experience the beauty, catch a cultural performance, or enjoy sipping tea in the 50-seat tea house, located in the Tower of Cosmic Reflections.
Sounds from both Portland and Suzhou are combined to form the garden's name Lan Su. "Lan" is also the Chinese word for "Orchid" and "Su" is the word for "Arise" or "Awaken," so the garden's name can also be interpreted poetically as "Garden of Awakening Orchids," a poetic and magical name befitting the visitor's experience.
Guests of the garden often leave with an inner calm born of deep reflection and relaxation. Peace comes as the mind stills. A visit to Lan Su might be just what you need to awaken your soul!
You are invited to join the WLACC on the field trip to Lan Su Garden. We will leave from the center at 9 a.m. June 11, returning at 2:30 p.m. The cost of the trip is $25 and includes transportation, admission to the garden and tea.
