Few sports have the history that sabre fencing enjoys. Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics.

Based on the traditional skills of swordsmanship, the modern sport arose at the end of the 19th century, with the Italian school having modified the historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school later refining the Italian system.

All you need to know is that sabre fencing involves quick thinking, coordination, strength and agility. Those skills and more will be developed in Lake Oswego Parks and Rec's En Garde Fencing Camp taking place July 29 through Aug. 2 and Aug. 5 through 9 at Forest Hills Elementary. The camp is for those ages 7 to 12, and meets from 9 a.m. to noon. Fee is $120.
