Indians will finish up preseason play this week and begin league play at Madras on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.

PIONEER PHOTO: CONNER WILLIAMS - Molalla junior Jeff Larsen looks to pass the ball to junior Ben Daniels during the Indians' 47-66 loss to
Valley Catholic last Friday.Molalla's boys' basketball team has had a tough preseason schedule this year, and though there have been a pair of wins mixed in, the Indians have largely struggled so far as four non-league games remain before Tri-Valley play begins.

The Indians are sitting at 2-8 thus far after grabbing wins over Kennedy and Elmira, and have gone up against some very tough teams like Columbia Christian, Banks, Western Mennonite, Central, Scappoose, and Valley Catholic. Molalla has largely held their own in most of those games despite a lack of size and small senior class, and they'll be looking to continue to approve as league play approaches.

"Although we have played some tough teams, there is always room for improvement, and we are willing to work to get better," junior Jeff Larsen said. "Playing tough teams will prepare us for the future; it's disappointing to lose a game, but I don't let that get in the way of my confidence, because you need confidence to be a good player."

Larsen still has high expectations for himself and for the team, and he said they put in a high amount of effort into their practices and that they work well together on the court.

"My expectations are to win league or make the playoffs," Larsen said.

Molalla is schedule to open up Tri-Valley play at Madras (3-9) on Jan. 16. Until then, they finish out their non-league schedule this week with four games in five days: they took on 1A Damascus Christian (8-2, 5-0 Valley 10) in an away game on Monday; they'll then travel to North Marion (7-5) on Tuesday; return home for a matchup against Yamhill-Carlton (2-9) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.; and will then finish out their preseason schedule at Cascade (7-4) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
