Protect Your Roof from Your Holiday Décor
Americans love to decorate their homes with all manner of décor during the holidays. Lights for Santa to find our chimney, inflatable snow globes, plastic sleds with Santa and reindeer, we love it.
As roofers, we have seen some serious damage to roofs by over enthusiastic decorators. Never use a staple gun or nails into the roof to put up Christmas lights! Once they come out of those shingles there will be a hole for the rains of January to pour into. Instead, plastic clips are your friend. They work by clipping onto the gutters, shingles or eaves of your roof. There are different kinds of clips for different kinds of roofs; clay tile clips, shingle clips, eave clips and clips for the ridge of your roof.
Keep ladders firmly planted, and try not to reach more than an arm's length away while hanging lights. Falling off the roof is not the kind of present your family wants this Christmas, or ever.
Test your lights before you put them up. A blank row of lighting in an otherwise brilliant display is disheartening. Properly secure your rooftop decorations to prevent them from coming loose during a windstorm and potentially landing on a vehicle or holiday guest and make sure your lights, extension cords, and outlets are rated for outdoor use.
Pacific West Roofing is just a call away if you notice a problem with your roof while you are up there.
