OREGON SPORTS HISTORY/1955: Beavers split with Solons; Erv Lind Florists win at Normandale Park

June 12-13, 1955

An 18-year-old University of Portland student and former Central Catholic High star quarterback sets a record in winning the Rose City Amateur golf tournament on the Northeast Portland municipal course.

Vince Altenhofen shoots a 9-under-par 207 for 54 holes. He wins by six strokes.

• The Portland Beavers and Sacramento Solons split a Pacific Coast League baseball doubleheader.

• The Erv Lind Florists women's softball team downs the Washingtonians, 5-3, at Normandale Park.

• Other events taking place include the Junior Chamber of Commerce tennis tournament at the Irvington Club, a baseball game between Portland Air Base and Gresham, the city championship archery tournament at Washington Park, City League and Tri-County American Legion baseball, the Oregon Golf Association's state junior tournament at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club, 19 softball games in nine different city leagues, pro wrestling at the Labor Temple, and the Golden Rose ski races at Mt. Hood.
