MONDAY LOCAL SPORTS NEWS/Bob Gilder, Bob Harrington qualify for U.S. Senior Open; Ducks men's hoops headed to MSG; Winterhawks sign prospect


Oregon State will open the College World Series at noon PT Saturday against North Carolina. ESPN will televise the game from Omaha, Nebraska.

The Beavers (49-10-1) won five consecutive postseason games to qualify for the CWS for the seventh time.

North Carolina, which swept Stetson in the NCAA super regional, is 43-18. The Tar Heels won the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Oregon State is 4-1 all-time against North Carolina. All five games came at the College World Series, most recently in the 2007 CWS championship series won by the Beavers.

Washington (35-24) and Mississippi State (37-27) are the other teams in the Beavers' bracket.

OSU's second game will be played on Monday — either an elimination game at 11 a.m. PT or a winner's bracket game at 4 p.m. PT.

Arkansas (44-19), Texas (42-21), Florida (47-19) and Texas Tech (44-18) are in the other bracket, which starts play on Sunday.


Corvallis native Bob Gilder and Portlander Bob Harrington were among four players who qualified on Monday for the U.S. Senior Open golf tournament.

Jeff Gallagher of Henderson, Nevada and Brian Mogg of Windermere, Florida also qualified during a sectional qualifying event at Waverley Country Club.

Gallagher shot a 1-under-par 70 to earn medalist honors. Gilder, Harrington and Mogg finished at even par to earn the other three spots in the Senior Open.

A total of 91 golfers played in the qualifier.

Tim Hval of Portland shot 73 and is the first alternate. George Mack Jr., who now lives in Sisters, is the second alternate.

The U.S. Senior Open is June 27-July 1 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado.


The Oregon men's basketball team will face Iowa on Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The game is a semifinal of the 2018 2K Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. On Nov. 16, the Ducks will face Syracuse or Connecticut in the championship or third-place game.

Match-ups for the 21st 2K Classic were announced on Monday. In addition to the games in New York, Oregon will play host to a pair of games as part of 2K Classic regional action.

Oregon will open the 2018-19 season with a home game against Eastern Washington. The Ducks will play host to Green Bay on Nov. 20 at Matthew Knight Arena.

The remainder of the Ducks' schedule has not yet been announced. Oregon is bringing in a recruiting class rated among the best in the country.


The Portland Winterhawks have signed defenseman Kurtis Smythe to a Western Hockey League contract.

A Cloverdale, British Columbia native, Smythe is the first 2002-born defenseman to sign with Portland. He is expected to join Portland for the 2019-2020 season as a 17-year-old.

He will play next season for the Delta (B.C.) Hockey Academy. He spent last season with the Delta Hockey Academy Prep team, posting four goals and nine assists in 33 games.

The Winterhawks acquired Smythe in a trade with Saskatoon for a fourth-round pick in this spring's WHL bantam draft.?
