NCAA won't consider Portland for tournament games
Jan. 10-14, 1997
The NCAA says it won't consider the Rose Garden as a site for its events because Oregon has a sports lottery, Sports Action (which has wagering only on pro football games).
Oregon had bid for men's basketball tournament games in 2000 and 2001, and UO athletic director Bill Moos says the Ducks "would love" to play host to a women's basketball Final Four.
• Starting small forward Clifford Robinson has been suspended for one game by the Trail Blazers for cursing at coach P.J. Carlesimo and assistant Elston Turner during a loss to the Miami Heat. Robinson will lose one game's pay, about $39,000.
It's the third suspension this season of a Blazer; guard Isaiah Rider has been suspended twice, also sitting out for cursing at Carlesimo.
"I don't take things personally. ... We have an emotional team," Carlesimo said, adding that Robinson "hasn't just been good this year, he's been exceptional, in terms of attitude and leadership and everything he's done."
Assistant GM Jim Paxson says Robinson told him: "Hey, I just want to win."
