Portland brewery agrees to give 1 percent of its sales volume in donations to several groups

Portland's Hopworks Urban Brewery has joined the 1% for the Planet movement, agreeing to donate the equivalent of 1 percent of its annual beer sales to environmental causes.

Hopworks is calling its campaign Good Beer Does Good.

The brewery will donate to Oregon Wild, Forest Park Conservancy, The Street Trust, Northwest Trail Alliance, Salmon-Safe and The Freshwater Trust.

Hopworks will kick off the campaign with an event at its Hopworks Bikebar, 3947 N. Williams Ave., on Tuesday, May 16, from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The company, which also operates a large brewpub on Southeast Powell Boulevard, already was a Certified B Corp., the first brewery in the Northwest to become certified by the sustainability-oriented program.

"Joining 1% for the Planet is a natural extension of our approach to business as a B Corporation brewery working on the triple bottom line," said Hopworks Brewmaster and founder, Christian Ettinger, in a news release announcing the campaign.

Operating worldwide, 1% for the Planet has resulted in more than $150 million donations to date, said Kate Williams, CEO.
