Looking to improve you handicap this summer? The Hoodland Women's Club is offering a chance for you to hone your golf skills while benefitting their scholarship fund for Sandy High seniors.
At 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, golfers and education advocates alike are invited to tee off for a cause at Mt. Hood Oregon Resort, 68010 E. Fairway Ave., Welches. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and tee time is 9 a.m.
Through the golf tournament and other fundraisers, the club supplies four $2,500 scholarships every year for Sandy High School (and soon to be Oregon Trail Academy) graduates.
"We're really invested in higher education and helping the kids in our area," said club Co-President Marci Slater. "A lot of kids in our area are first generation college students, so we want to help them as much as possible, not just financially but with guidance."
The fee to enter the golf tournament is $100 per person and includes lunch. If a round of golf doesn't interest you, but you want to be involved, you can also sponsor a hole at the event for $100.
Slater and her husband dedicate a hole every year to a deceased loved one who was passionate about golf.
Non-golfers can also come just for the grub, as long as they register by Aug. 12 on the club's website. Lunch is $22. There will also be an auction and raffle, featuring more than 50 locally sourced items and gift certificates.
Slater noted that people of all skill levels are welcome to attend the event.
"You don't have to be really good," she explained. "A lot of people are just out there having fun."
Prizes are awarded to the best teams, but Slater added that for the club the biggest reward is giving back.
"I like that the event raises money for the kids," she said. "I really believe in higher education of any kind. It gets people out of their community and helps them understand the bigger world."
