Fundraiser proceeds to send eight students to compete in Empire San Francisco event

Coach Chris Meyers attributes part of this growth and success to the team's participation in the Empire Mock Trial competition in San Francisco through the past three years. But sending the eight-member team would cost around $10,000.

To alleviate the expense, the Mock Trial Foundation will host a casino night from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the Sandy Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 38452 Proctor Blvd.

Although students won't be at the event, they should greatly benefit from the proceeds.

"The kids really benefit from Empire because they get to meet other kids from all over the country and all over the world," Meyers noted. "And, the time they put in to learn all the skills and to work together is so valuable. Every kid who's ever done it would say it's one of the highlights of their mock trials career."

The casino night will include games of craps, roulette and blackjack. Small plates of food will also be offered, as well as drinks for purchase. Each person receives $300 in casino cash with the purchase of a ticket, and casino cash can also be used to bid on silent auction items.

Tickets are $30 per person, $50 per couple in advance or $40 per person and $60 per couple if purchased at the door. Those who pre-order receive an extra $100 in casino cash.

Winners of the various games can receive up to $200 in cash prizes. The event is not affiliated with the Oregon Trail School District.

"It's a great time," Meyers said. "They can have a lot of fun, plus every dime of this goes to helping the kids go (to San Francisco)."

Donations of auction items and sponsors of the event are still being accepted and greatly appreciated, the foundation said.
