Volleyball: Kennedy wins league title, first round playoff game
For the second year in a row and seventh time in the past eight seasons, the Kennedy volleyball program is once again back in the state quarterfinal tournament.
The No. 1 Trojans (27-1, 16-0 Tri-River) returned to the double-elimination tournament after dispatching the Reedsport Brave (12-14, 9-3 Sunset) in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-11) Saturday at Kennedy High School.
The victory came on the heels of the team's 3-0 win (25-15, 25-15, 25-14) over No. 9 Culver in the championship game of the Tri-River playoffs on Oct. 23, earning the top seed coming out of the conference.
The Trojans also garnered a number of awards following the league championship, including Conference Player of the Year Hallie Sprauer and Coach of the Year Laura Beyer. Sprauer was one of four Kennedy athletes to earn First Team All-Conference honors, joining teammates Sophia Carley, Hailey Arritola and Ellie Cantu.
Kalyssa Kleinschmit was selected to the All-Confernece Second Team, and Ibeth Gomez was a Third Team selection.
Kennedy enters the quarterfinals as the top-seeded team for the second time this decade. The Trojans previously were the top seed in the 2014 playoffs, but were upset in the semifinals by Grant Union and went on to finish fifth overall.
This year's team opens the quarterfinal tournament against the No. 8 Glide Wildcats (19-5, 11-1 Southern Cascade) at 1:15 p.m. Friday.
The 2018 2A state quarterfinal tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.
