Lyft passengers in the Portland area can now request to be picked in an all-electric or hybrid vehicle.
The ride-share company announced the Green Mode program at a press conference on Wednesday.
"At Lyft, we think it's our responsibility to make cities more livable," said Anthony Foxx, Lyft's chief policy officer. He previously served as former President Obama's secretary of the Department of Transportation,
The option is supported by PGE, which is offfering discounted recharging to Lyft drivers with electrified vehicles.
""We're super excited at PGE to be part of Lyft's Green Mode," said Dave Robertson, PGE's vice president for public policy.
The press conference was held at the downtown showroom for Forth Mobiloity, an electrified vehicle advocacy organization. Deputy Director Zach Henkin also spoke in support of the option, which Lyft customers can choose when they order rides.
Lyft also bringing hundreds of electric and hybrid vehicles to its Portland Express Drive program that makes them available for drivers to rent. Altogether, more than 20 percentof all Lyft rides in Portland will be in hybrid or electric vehicles.
"Environmental stewardship is important to the Portland community and to Lyft, which is why we were the first rideshare company to become carbon neutral and why we will continue to find ways to offset our environmental impact," Lyft said when announcing the April 25 press conference.
