If you wanted to design the perfect pickup truck, it would include great fuel economy, ample towing power, and a comfortable cab you could drive every day. That's what Chevrolet has achieved with the 2020 Silverado 1500 diesel.
The new engine is an inline six-cylinder design, with 3.0 liters of displacement and a turbocharger. The new Silverado diesel joins a wide array of engine options ranging from a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to a mighty 6.2-liter V8. However, this small-displacement Duramax diesel will occupy a special place because of its 460 pound-feet of torque and its incredible fuel economy.
The EPA has not yet issued its official mileage estimates, so we decided to test the Duramax fuel economy ourselves. We took the Silverado on a real-world drive of about 15 miles. It was mostly flat, but there were a few hills, a little bit of freeway, and plenty of stop signs. We did our best to get good results, and brought the truck back showing 41.9 miles per gallon.
Beyond the economy, the 3.0-liter Duramax has plenty of power. It's fun to drive and will tow up to 9,300 pounds. The Duramax option will cost $2,495 more than the standard 5.3-liter V8 in the high-trim Silverado, and it will be available this fall on 2020 model year trucks.
The diesel is not the only thing Chevrolet has added to entice you into the 2020 Silverado. You can also get Chevrolet's Advanced Trailering System, which includes 15 different camera views. That might sound like a lot, but you'll quickly wonder how you ever pulled a trailer without this tech. The most amazing view that you'll use all the time is "invisible trailer." This setting combines views from both sides of the vehicle and a remote camera mounted on the back of the trailer to give you a true rear-view as if the trailer wasn't there.
The system also includes basic views like blind spots on both sides, a look at the truck bed, or a remote camera inside the trailer. That can be extremely valuable if you're pulling horses.
Beyond all that, the 2020 Silverado has been updated with all the modern features you want, including adaptive cruise control, power up and down tailgate, task lighting, and eight different trim levels to choose from. JD Power has given the Silverado its top dependability awards for the past four years.
Pickup trucks are in the middle of a major battle between automakers. Truck buyers are the clear winners because automakers are putting everything they've got into this competition. If you're planning a truck purchase later this year, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado has got plenty to show you.
