2019 Cadillac XT4: Premium performance in a small package
The all-new 2019 XT4 is poised to do well in the hot luxury subcompact crossover market. It has everything buyers are looking for, including sharp exterior styling, a premium interior with available option packages, a powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, a refined twin-clutch automatic transmission, and available all-wheel-drive at every trim level.
The only thing potentially hold it back is its brand, Cadillac. Although America's premiere luxury manufacturer is offering a full line of competitive vehicles, it is struggling to break into the top tier in the public mind.
I'm at a loss to understand why. Although Cadillacs were once considered out of date, the company has completely reinvented itself. Beginning with its cars and then moving into the crossover market, it has been producing stylish and innovative vehicles for years now. It has also found success on the race track in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series. But only Lincoln seems to be struggling more to establish its luxury credentials these days.
The 2019 Cadillac XT4 should help change that, if buyers give it a chance. My AWD Sport model was thoroughly modern and a true luxury vehicle. The Red Horizon paint showed off the crisp, contemporary lines. The large front air dam was aggressive for a subcompact crossover, while the large wheel wells and sloped rear end gave it a sporty look. The interior was surprisingly roomy for a subcompact crossover, and the back seats offered a good amount of legroom. The T2.0 pumped out a respectable 237 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque, which the nine-speed automatic transmission channeled smoothly to either the front or all four wheels, depending on the drive mode we selected.
Our favorite was the Sport mode, which increased throttle response and tightened up the suspension, while keeping it in AWD.
By chance we needed to make several long trips for work during our one-week test period, and found the XT4 very comfortable and easy to drive at freeway speeds. The cooling setting on the ventilated front leather bucket seats was especially appreciated on hot days.
The base Luxury XT4 starts at around $35,000, which is on the low end for such vehicles. Our fully-loaded AWD Sport model was priced at slightly under $52,000, which is not out of line with the competition, especially considering it came with a series of comfort, infotainment and safety packages that included just about every automotive technology on the market today.
With the all-new 2019 XT4, Cadillac shows that it is now willing and able to compete well in every automotive niche. Those looking for a genuine luxury subcompact crossover should check it out before making a decision
