Tech-rich 2019 Buick Regal GS offers premium-level performance
If you've been shopping for a premium sports sedan, the Japanese and European imports have a lot to offer. You might be surprised to learn that the Buick Regal competes strongly with the premium import brands, and offers breathtaking performance while beating many premium brands on price.
The Regal comes in many trims, but sport driving enthusiasts should go straight to the GS trim. This model comes equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine rated at 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a crisp nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive for excellent grip and acceleration. The Regal GS will hit 60 MPH in just 5.4 seconds.
Inside, the Regal continues its serious performance trim with well-bolstered sport seats trimmed in perforated leather. Both front seats are heated, as is the steering wheel. As we head into another Northwest winter, those are important comfort features.
The Regal also delivers the tech you expect from a premium model. Active noise cancellation keeps the cabin pleasantly quiet, while the standard Buick infotainment system provides an 8-inch touchscreen interface. Sirius/XM satellite radio, Bluetooth streaming, and support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay provide access to your tunes. Like all GM vehicles, the Regal offers standalone 4G/LTE data connectivity and an in-car wifi hot spot.
The optional Sights & Sounds package upgrades the Regal with GPS navigation and a premium HD Radio and premium audio system, but with the navigation functions included in both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, you can consider this package truly optional.
The more important package is the Driver Confidence suite, which includes adaptive cruise control with a following distance indicator, forward collision alerts with automatic braking, and lane keeping assistance. Best of all, this package includes a useful head-up display. Another option to consider is the appearance package, because this one includes LED headlights, cornering lights, and wireless device charging on the console.
Premium buyers expect the advanced tech and safety features, but the real reason to buy the Regal GS is found on the test drive. This car offers serious performance. The nine-speed transmission keeps the V6 engine in its best power band in a way that the turbocharged four-cylinders of other sport sedans simply cannot match. The Regal always has plenty of power on tap.
On a twisty mountain road, the GS really shines. The suspension is firm without being harsh. The all-wheel-drive and the adaptive dampers combine to give you confidence that the Regal will go where you want it to go. When it's time to slow down, that's no problem for the Brembo front brakes.
If you've been considering spending big money on a sport sedan, make sure you take a drive in the 2019 Buick Regal GS AWD before you make any final decisions.
