Ross Scott, Grant Balsbough and Eli Thayer win first-team berths for 2019 season

PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - West Linn senior attack Ross Scott was the top vote getter in the Three Rivers League after leading the Lions all the way to the OHSLA state championship game. The West Linn boys lacrosse team didn't get everything it wanted from the 2019 spring season.

But the Lions flew high and battled the state's best this spring, eventually falling just one game short of their ultimate goal of winning a state championship.

The rest of the league — and state — took notice and lavished West Linn's best players with postseason honors.

They saw three players — Ross Scott, Grant Balsbough and Eli Thayer — honored on the all-Three Rivers League first team, another five selected to the second team and still five more named honorable mention.

Further, Scott — a Rutgers commit — was also chosen first-team all-state, an All-American and an Academic All-American, while Balsbough was selected first-team all-state and Berggren was named an Academic All-American.

Scott made the last season of his star-spangled high school career one of his best. The senior attack was the leading vote-getter in the Three Rivers League, finishing his season with 67 goals and 25 assists as the Lions placed second in the TRL and advanced all the way to the OHSLA state championship contest.

"Ross is one of the quickest, hardest dodgers we have ever had," said West Linn coach Mark Flood. "He will try and take anyone at 'x' and get into shooting or feeding position. He has great hands and great shooting and finishing skills."

Thayer, a junior at long stick middle, won his berth on the first team after averaging 4.8 ground balls per game and contributing on both ends of the field.

"Eli … has improved on his (ground balls) and advancing the ball upfield," Flood said. "(He's a) very good one-on-one defender (and) has also done well when asked to faceoff."

Balsbough, a junior defender, earned his spot after collecting 1.8 ground balls per game and stepping up to become the Lions' top defender in 2019.

"Grant … has become our No. 1 guy as a one-on-one defender," Flood said. "(He) always takes the opponents' best attackman, he is a very good athlete and has become tough to beat one-on-one."

Second-team selections from West Linn included: junior attack Ethan Loun (42 goals, 24 assists); senior midfielder Anders Martenson (13 goals, 1 assist, 2.2 ground balls per game); senior midfielder Lucas Hockman (25 goals, seven assists); junior midfielder Zach Vannaman (17 goals, three assists, two ground balls per game); and Berggren, a senior, at short stick defensive midfielder after scoring two goals and averaging 3.6 ground balls per game.

Honorable mention picks include: senior attack Michael Stell, junior midfielder Jack Johnson, junior faceoff Spencer Edwards, senior defender Isaac Sebastian and senior goalie Carson Bradford.

Loun and Thayer also won honorable mention all-state honors.
